Defence approachHow a Criminal Lawyer in North York Handles Your Case
From a North York arrest to the Armoury Street courthouse
North York cases that were once heard in courtrooms at 1000 Finch Avenue West — the same building as our office — moved downtown when the Toronto Courthouse at 10 Armoury Street opened in February 2023. If you are held after arrest, your bail hearing is at the Toronto Region Bail Centre at 2201 Finch Avenue West. If police release you instead, your release document names a first-appearance date at Armoury Street. After that come disclosure from the Crown, a Crown pre-trial, and a judicial pre-trial before any trial date is set. Our guide to the Ontario criminal court process walks through each stage.
Where North York charges tend to start
Many North York driving files begin on the 401 collector and express lanes or at the Highway 400 interchange, where the OPP rather than Toronto Police lays the charge. Toronto Police run RIDE checks on Yonge Street, Sheppard and Finch, especially through the holiday season. Retail and mall theft allegations along the Yonge corridor are common, as are domestic calls from the high-rise neighbourhoods off Bathurst and Dufferin. A DUI lawyer in North York has to know which agency investigated, because the officer’s notes and breath-testing records will come from that agency.
The first 48 hours after a North York charge
Read every condition on your release order or undertaking, and follow it to the letter. Breaching a condition is a separate criminal offence. If the paperwork lists a fingerprinting date at a Toronto Police facility, attend it. Write down your own account while it is fresh, keep receipts and phone records that place you somewhere, and say nothing to police about the facts until you have legal advice. Your rights when arrested in Ontario are set out in plain language on our blog.
Meeting a North York criminal defence lawyer in person
Because the office sits between Finch West station and Highway 400, most North York clients meet Aaron face to face, often the same day they call. He reviews the disclosure with you in the office, attends the bail centre a few minutes away, and appears at Armoury Street himself on substantive dates. For an assault lawyer in North York or a drinking-and-driving defence, the person you meet is the person who argues your case.
